Generic Equivalent of Restasis
DESCRIPTION
Restasis (Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Emulsion) eye drops are an Rx medication that belong to the class of medications called anti-inflammatories or immunomodulators. This medication is used to treat moderate to moderately severe dry eye disease, which is when the eyes do not produce enough tears to keep the eyes moist and comfortable. It is believed that Restasis (cyclosporine) eye drops work on the immune cells in the eyes to decrease inflammation that may be causing dry eyes.
Restasis is preservative free which is better for patients that have preservative allergies.
Restasis is the only eye drop that helps increase your eyes' natural ability to produce tears, which may be reduced by inflammation due to Chronic Dry Eye disease. Restasis did not increase tear production in patients using anti-inflammatory eye drops or tear duct plugs.
With Restasis, you may:
- Continue to use artificial tears as needed for temporary relief, leaving 15 minutes between products;
- Rely less on artificial tears over time as you make more of your own real tears. Individual results may vary.
Restasis may also be used for purposes not listed in this guide.

SAFETY
Do not take Restasis if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. Before taking this medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history. You should not start, stop or change the dosage of any medications without your doctor’s approval.
Restasis should not be used while wearing contact lenses. Patients with chronic dry eye are generally advised not to wear contact lenses. If contact lenses are worn, they should be removed before applying Restasis. Lenses may be inserted 15 minutes after applying Restasis.
The safety and effectiveness of Restasis has not been established in children below the age of 16.
The effectiveness of Restasis may be affected if administered with other eye drops. Patients using other eye drops should consult with their eye doctor for advice. Patients may use Restasis with artificial tears or over-the-counter eye lubricants, allowing a 15-minute interval between products.
Due to the lack of conclusive safety data, Restasis should be used in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Restasis is classified as FDA pregnancy risk category C (it caused harm in studies with animals, but use during pregnancy in humans has not been adequately evaluated).
It is not known if cyclosporine is excreted into breast milk following administration into the eye. Although blood levels were undetectable following ophthalmic administration, Restasis should be used cautiously during nursing.
