Imitrex is a product of GlaxoSmithKline Canada, also known as Imigran. The drug is available in three dosage forms of 5 mg, 20 mg and 100 mg. The 5 mg and 20 mg dosage are each supplied in boxes of 2 nasal spray devices (1 x 2 devices). Each unit dose spray supplies 5 mg and 20 mg respectively. The 100 mg dosage is available in blister packs containing 6 tablets.

What Should I Avoid While Taking Imitrex?

Imitrex can result in drowsiness. Do not drive or use machinery until you are sure that you are not drowsy.

Is Imitrex a Controlled Substance?

Imitrex belongs to the class of anti-migraine drugs. Imitrex 5 mg, 20 mg or 100 mg is not a controlled substance under the Control Substance Act.

How is Imitrex Metabolized in Body?

When Should You Not Take Imitrex?

Do not take Imitrex if you:
  • Are allergic to Sumatriptan or any of the ingredients of Imitrex
  • Have a history of heart problems
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have been taking or recently taken Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (within last 2 weeks)
  • Are taking or recently taken (within 24 hours) an ergotamine medication or any other triptan used to treat migraine
  • Have any liver disorders
Imitrex should not be used for treating any other type of headaches that are not related to migraine attacks.

What Should You Tell Your Doctor Before Taking Imitrex?

Before you take Imitrex, you should tell your doctor if you:
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or using insufficient contraception
  • Are breast-feeding or planning to do so
  • Suffer from chest pain, heart disease, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeats
  • Had a heart attack or angina in the past
  • Are at the risk of heart disease (have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, smoking history, postmenopausal or a male over 40 years of age)
  • Had allergy to this or any other medicine or are allergic to sulpha containing drugs
  • Are taking medications especially migraine medications such as other triptans or those containing ergotamine
  • Have ever experienced difficulty in moving one side of your body while having a headache
  • Had a stroke, transient ischemic attack or Raynaud Syndrome in the past
  • Are under 18 years or over 65 years of age
  • Are taking lithium, or anti0depressants such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), or serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)
  • Have any kidney or liver disease
  • Have epilepsy or seizures
  • Have headache that is different from usual migraine headaches
