Is A Prescription Required To purchase Cantharone?

Cantharone is both an over the counter and prescription topical solution that can be purchased from licensed Canadian online pharmacies.

What Does Cantharone Do?

Cantharone is a topical solution prescribed for the removal of benign growths on skin such as warts. It is designed for topical application by a doctor. Painless application and absence of instruments makes it every useful especially for treatment of children. Cantharone Plus is also used for the removal of warts especially plantar and resistant and heavily keratinized warts.

What Type of Drug Are Cantharone and Cantharone Plus?

Cantharone contains Cantharidin 0.7% in an adherent film forming vehicle. Cantharidin is a vesicant (an agent that causes blistering). Cantharone Plus is a topical solution that contains 30% salicylic acid, 2% podophyllin BP, 1% cantharidin in a film-forming vehicle containing 0.5% octylphenylpolyethylene glycol, cellosolve, ethocel, collodion, castor oil and acetone.

How Does Cantharone and Cantharone Plus Work?

The vesicant action of Cantharidin is because of its primary acantholytic action (loss of adhesion between keratinocytes), which causes exfoliation of the benign tumor, thus treating warts. The lytic action of cantharidin does not reach beyond the epidermal cells, with the basal layer remaining intact. As a result, there is no scarring from its topical application.

Cantharone Plus is a mixture of three wart removing agents. The action of salicylic acid is due to its keratolytic activity in removing wart virus infected epithelial cells. Podophyllin has caustic properties that cause destruction of tissue and cantharidin has vesicant action which helps to exfoliate the wart tumor.

How Are Cantharone and Cantharone Plus Supplied and Stored?

Cantharone and Cantharone Plus are manufactured by Dormer Laboratories. Cantharone is available in dosage form of 0.7 %/7.5 ml and Cantharone Plus is available as 1 %/2 %/30 %/7.5 ml dosage form. Cantharone is supplied as an over the counter medication whereas Cantharone Plus is available on prescription.

The generic form of Cantharone Plus, known as Cantharidin is a product manufactured by Paladin Labs Inc. It is available in the dosage form of 1 %/5 %/30 %/7.5 ml. Before opening the bottle completely, remove the blue or red safety seal. Always keep the medication tightly air sealed. An improper seal will cause the product to dry out of the bottle. Replace the cap as soon as you are finished to prevent solvent vaporization. These solutions are flammable; keep them away from sparks, flame and heat.

What Is the Cost of Cantharone?

How Are Cantharone and Cantharone Plus Used?

Cantharone and Cantharone Plus are for physician use only. They should not be dispensed or prescribed for patient administration under any circumstances. Both the solutions are very potent, so use sparingly. Treatment should be between 10 days to 2 weeks. It can be delayed if the area is inflamed. Both the products are to be used with a non-porous tape, for example Blenderm. Do not occlude more than 8 hours with Cantharone Plus and 24 hours with Cantharone. Do not use tape when treating molluscum. The physician can do the sterile puncture of the blister to relieve the discomfort. Daily soaks will be at the discretion of the physician. It is recommended to use a mild anti-bacterial soap until tissue re-epithelializes.

How Should You Manage the Painful and Blistered Wart?

The blister formed with application of Cantharone might be painful and last for 2-4 days. A mild analgesic such as acetaminophen, plain or with codeine may be taken. Patients vary in their sensitivity to Cantharone and in some cases there might be tingling, burning sensation or extreme tenderness. In order to treat the pain, remove the tape and soak the area in cool water for 10-15 minutes, as needed, provided sufficient time has been allowed for the penetration of the medication. The physician can also decide to puncture the blister with a sterile method and cover the area with an antiseptic and a Band-aid.

What Are The Side Effects of Cantharone?

Like with all the medications, Cantharone can also cause side effects but not everybody gets them. Some possible side effects of Cantharone include development of annular warts following its application. These lesions are superficial and may alarm the patient, but present little problem. One case of chemical lymphangitis has been reported following use of Cantharone in combination with salicylic acid plaster. Also, a case of extreme painful blistering after treatment of multiple axillary lesions has been reported.

When Should You Not Use Cantharone?

Do not use Cantharone if you are:
  • Are allergic to cantharidin or any other ingredients in Cantharone
  • Are pregnant or breast-feeding
